A study on the structure and types of spider webs constructed by Orb weaver spiders in Belgaum District

Abstract
Orb weaver spiders are among the most important web-building spiders
and play a significant role in maintaining ecological balance through natural
insect population control. The present study, titled "A Study on the
Structure and Types of Spider Webs Constructed by Orb Weaver Spiders in Belgaum
District," aims to identify the orb weaver spider species occurring in the
study area and examine the structural characteristics and types of webs they
construct. Field surveys were conducted across selected habitats, including
forests, agricultural fields, gardens, wetlands, and urban green spaces. Spider
species were identified using standard taxonomic keys, while web
characteristics such as web diameter, radial threads, spiral spacing, hub size,
and web type were recorded through field observations and photographic
documentation. Habitat variables, including vegetation type, temperature, and
humidity, were also considered to understand their influence on web
architecture. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical
techniques and presented through tables, graphs, and photographs. The study
revealed variations in web structure among different orb weaver species and
indicated that habitat conditions influence web architecture. The findings
provide baseline information on the diversity of orb weaver spiders and their
web-building behaviour in Belgaum district. The study contributes to the fields
of arachnology, behavioural ecology, biodiversity documentation, and
conservation by improving the understanding of spider diversity and ecological
adaptations in different habitats.
